Salt has been our business since 1918. Starting as Royal Dutch Salt Industries (KNZ) in Boekelo, the Netherlands, we first obtained our products by means of evaporation in open pans. The salt was dissolved in underground salt layers, formed hundred of millions of years ago. In 1926, we adopted the far more energy efficient method of vacuum evaporation. When the Twente-Rijn canal was built in the early ‘30’s, we moved our plant to Hengelo, to take advantage of the waterway connections.
The discovery of salt in the Northern part of the Netherlands in 1951, and the facilities for loading seagoing ships there, led to the construction of a salt-producing plant in Delfzijl, which came on stream in 1959. Around 1963 we extended our business by starting salt production in Denmark, to serve the Scandinavian markets as well.
In our market approach we distinguish six end-customer market segments: Retail, Food, Pharma, Agriculture, Water Treatment and Industrial. With this segmentation we are able offer different value propositions to customers varying from commodities in the industrial market to high value specialties in the pharmaceutical market.
We are constantly looking for new and better products that serve the needs of our customers and that can improve their businesses. If there is anything you are looking for please feel free to contact us.
